I would say that Canon and Nikon are very similar to each other. I think it is a good idea to not focus so much on which is better and instead on the actual camera itself. Invest some money on the lenses rather than the body, because optics will get you far more than body will.

Just like with anything, its more about the specific tool for the job. If you know exactly what you will be using your camera for, then you are best off doing comparisons of the individual models rather then a company to company comparison.
